FREDERICTON, NB, June 3, 2022 – LuminUltra Technologies Ltd. CEO Pat Whalen was named 2022 Business Leader of the year by Water’s Next at the Canadian Water Summit in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Thursday night.
“It’s an honour to have been selected as this year’s winner of the Business Leader award,” Whalen said.
“This award is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of the entire team at LuminUltra, who have achieved so much throughout the course of our history but in particular in the past couple of years as we put our capabilities to work in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The Water’s Next business leader award is presented to a person in the private sector who has demonstrated leadership in the Canadian water sector both inside and outside their professional position, according to the award criteria.
In the past year, LuminUltra has partnered with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the National Wastewater Surveillance System, testing for the virus that causes COVID-19 in wastewater from hundreds of sites across the U.S.
LuminUltra also secured funding from the National Research Council of Canada to develop a rapid-result portable device for detecting the virus in wastewater. It was one of the first companies to receive the GBAC Star Registered Technology & Registered Programs designation from the Global Biorisk Advisory Council, and LuminUltra was named one of Canada’s Top Small and Medium Employers for 2022.
“I want to thank our team members from around the world, our partners, and our customers,” Whalen said. “Thank you to the organizers for this honour, and congratulations to the other finalists and winners for their outstanding achievements.”
