LuminUltra Joins Joint Industry Project Seriatim VI to Advance Microbial Souring Research in Energy Sector

The collaboration with Rawwater aims to improve mitigation strategies, enhance safety and reduce operational risk

We are proud to announce our participation in Seriatim VI, a globally recognized Joint Industry Project (JIP) led by Rawwater. Now in its sixth phase, this initiative is dedicated to advancing the industry’s understanding of microbial sour gas generation under real-world oilfield conditions.

For nearly 20 years, the Seriatim JIP has brought together energy leaders to study microbial souring in pressurized, flowing bioreactors, with the goal of improving mitigation strategies, enhancing safety, and reducing operational risk.

LuminUltra is contributing advanced microbial monitoring solutions, including 2nd Generation ATP®, GeneCount® qPCR, and next-generation sequencing (NGS). These technologies will be used to support detection and identification of microbial activity in simulated reservoir conditions to support the project stakeholders’ investigation into reservoir souring.

Why microbial souring matters

In oil and gas production, reservoir souring – the buildup of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) caused by sulfate reducing prokaryotes (SRP) and other sulfur cycling microorganisms – is an industry wide challenge in upstream oil and gas. This toxic, corrosive gas not only jeopardizes worker safety and asset integrity but also affects outcomes including product quality and significantly increases refining costs.

Traditionally, identifying the microbial drivers behind souring has been complex and reactive. But today, a real-time biological monitoring program provides operators with actionable insight before problems escalate. Tools including rapid ATP measurement for total microbial activity and molecular testing like qPCR and NGS together build a holistic assessment of microbial souring risk, mitigation efficacy, and the impact of varying reservoir conditions.

LuminUltra has long been trusted by oil and gas leaders to support biofouling control, MIC mitigation, souring and reservoir health monitoring. Our involvement in the Seriatim VI JIP extends that commitment; collaborating at the forefront of innovation to push the science of microbial diagnostics forward. Our ultimate goal is helping our partners manage their microbiological risk – achieving clarity when it matters most.
